Sewing for Absolute Beginners

Class Description:

• Introduction to the sewing machine: lockstitch formation, operation, threading, tension, troubleshooting, basic machine maintenance

• Foundational skills: stitch length, stitch width, seam allowance, seam finish

• Needle and thread overview

• Fabric characteristics, preparing, and cutting

• Sewing machines, materials, and sewing supplies provided OR bring your own

• Project: Helen’s Closet Costa Tote Bag

  • If you would like to bring your own materials for the project, we recommend you bring 2 yards of medium to heavyweight woven fabric. The pattern recommends cotton broadcloth, denim, cotton twill, and canvas for the bag body and pocket. The bag lining can be slightly lighter weight fabric such as quilting cotton or cotton lawn (1.5 yards for bag body, straps, pockets and .5 yard for bag lining… more fabric will be needed if using directional prints).

• Recommended for absolute beginners – no experience necessary!

• Class size maximum: 6 students

• Ages 16+

Cancellation Policy:

We reserve the right to cancel workshops or classes due to low enrollment, inclement weather, or instructor illness. We will try our best to update you of this change as soon as possible. You will receive a full refund due to a cancellation of this nature. If we need to cancel a single session within a class series, a make-up class will be rescheduled.

If you need to cancel because a class no longer works for you, please reach out to us at information@continuingthred.org or call us at 802.736.9493. We can issue you a full refund or credit towards a future class if you cancel 14 days ahead of the class start day. After this time, you will receive a 50% refund or credit if you cancel up to 8 days before the class start day. After this point, no refunds or credits will be issued for a cancellation, not showing up for class, or no longer attending class. Thank you for understanding this policy is in place to provide the most time and opportunity for someone else to fill the class spot.

Waiver:

You will be asked on the day of your class to sign a liability waiver
